Multifunctional nanomaterials have broad applications in many biological fields, such asbiosensors, biological label, fluorescence imaging and disease diagnosis, due to their specialphysical and chemical properties different from other traditional materials. Up to now, manymultifunctional nanomaterials with various structures, like core-shell structured nanoparticleswith functional core and shell, which forms dual or multi-functions complexing excellentperformance and new features, have been synthesized and applied in many high-tech fields.The hollow nanostructure materials have attracted enormous interest as a special structure ofthe core-shell nanostructures, which have a larger specific surface area, lower density andbetter permeability surface because of their cavity.Herein, poly(acrylic acid sodium salt)(PAAS) micro/nano spheres were first obtainedquickly using a novel method. The PAAS template-based routh for the preparation of themesoporous lanthanide-doped gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3:Ln3+) hollow nanospheres withmulticolored upconversion emissions and polyacrylic acid@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8(PAA@ZIF-8)nanoparticles with ultrahigh drug loading capability for pH-sensitive drugrelease were achieved through the coordination between–COO-groups provided by PAAStemplates and Ln3+or Zn2+. Additionally, characterization methods were used to characterizethe properties of resulting nanoparticles, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) analyses andupconversion florescence spectrophotometer. These results confirm their upconversion andpH-sensitive property, respectively, and their excellent biocompatibility. Furthermore, thePAAS template-directed method could be extended to fabricate other mesoporous metal-oxideand down-conversion fluorescence nanomaterials for their various potential chemical,biological and physical applications.
