Steel drop weight tear test (DWTT) which could reflect reality of the fracture isused to characterize the ductile-brittle of materials. The results on the fracture of steeldrop weight tear test is an important index to inspect the quality and evaluate thefracture toughness of ship steel plate, pipeline steel and other materials. However, asthe usually characteristics of the fracture surface are scattered and irregular in shape,it is difficult to measure the area of fracture accurately and rapidly.The DWTT fracture morphology of X80steel pipe was first analyzed in order toimprove the accuracy to evaluate the image of DWTT fracture. The system based onthe DWTT fracture morphology and the intrinsic fracture image analysis which wasbuilt in manual. Then an image segmentation algorithm based on watershed andGrabCut algorithm was proposed The system using the mixed programmingtechnology by Matlab and C SHAPE, object-oriented programming, reduce the costof experiments. By this method, the foreground and background of the fracture imagewere divided interactively. Next the “interested zone” in the foreground was chosenartificially. At last, the selected area was divided by the watershed algorithm. Theconclude of the fracture toughness and inversely proportional to the thickness wasworked out by the DWTT fracture image analysis system which had analyzeddifferent kinds of steel plateThe experimental results show that evaluate DWTT fracture by the DWTTfracture image analysis system could get the evaluate results quickly, get theexperimental data more accurate, save money and improve efficiency.
