The landform of Shanxi Province is complex and multiple, including mountain, plain and basin, rich in coal resources, which is also the reason why exploitation of it will bring a regular surface movement and deformation. Currently, lots of research works about the regularity of surface movement and deformation for plain region have been done, however, for mountain and basin region, there are still many blind points need to be resolved. The surface movement and deformation might be different under different terrain conditions, such as mining method, coal seam conditions and topographic factors. According to the long-term collection and analysis for observation data, the experts have already come to a conclusion that the surface movement and deformation in mountain region is totally different from plain region. It is possible to reduce the construction damage by giving effective prediction of mountain surface movement/deformation after mining and following protective measures according to the relevant regulations, which is significant for the rational development of underground coal resources. In this paper, we focus on the mobile trajectory of surface point and surface deformation characters under two different terrain conditions, mountain region and plain region. The observation data is acquired when surface movement and deformation transmit to a stable condition, meanwhile, the calculation and comparison between the surface subsidence status and its related parameters have also been done. This paper has revealed some characters and rules about mountain region deformation caused by subsidence. To illustrate the difference and connection between mountain mining and plain mining, the paper has selected two practical coal mining examples:Ma Lan Mine from Shanxi coking coal Xishan coal electricity group company, located in complex mountain region; Shanxi Huoerxinhe Mine, typical plain type. Firstly, this paper provides some basic theory about mining subsidence, analysis the regularity of surface subsidence condition in Ma Lan Mine and Huoerxinhe Mine by calculating the observation data, which is acquired from surface observation station when surface is in a stable condition. After that, a basic model of mountain mining region is established by ANSYS system and the mountain model will be imported into FLAD3D for further calculation and analysis. The comparison between the simulated deformation and collected real deformation will reveal some rules and characters. Finally, the conclusion about surface movement and deformation under different terrain conditions will be listed, which provides a reliable support for predicting of surface movement and deformation under different mining region, post mining process and parameters for new mining design models.
