Under the volatile organic compounds (VOC) regulations strengthened from the viewpoint of environmental protection, waterborne paints has been an important research topic all over the world. The result of this effort is, among others, waterborne coatings such as acrylate emulsions. Acrylate emulsion coatings, which have an important commercial application in paint industry, are prepared through the polymerization of methacrylate and acrylate or their corresponding esters. The advantage of acrylate coatings is their resistance to hydrolysis during extended exterior exposure (weathering), high block resistance, hardness, gloss and high alkali and oxidation resistance. This paper is study on the polymerization of high quality acrylate emulsions which is applicated in the wood coatings, texting and analyzing the properities of the coatings. We have developed the following studies:1. The effort of the monomers which can make a crosslinking reaction at ambient tempreture, and the dosage of them on the properities of the emulsion or the coatings was studied. IR analyse technology was used to study the crosslinking reaction of one kinds of crosslinking system. The best dosage of the crosslinkers and the functional monomer were comfirmed to improve integrate quality of the emulsions and the coatings.2. Particles will be designed with the nano-sized combine to improve the performance of water-based coatings. The solid content of nanosized emulsion is up to42%, the diameter is64.9nm. These were prepared by the choice of appropriate type and amount of the initiator and emulsifier. The complex of anion emulsifier and reactive emulsifier were used in the process of polymerization with the amount of emulsifier1.8%of the total monomer.3. The application of some different kinds of coalescent in multi-layer core-shell acrylate emulsion was also investigated. By testing and comparing the effects of different coalescent on the properties or the performance of the coating, some kinds of high quality water-borne wood coatings which were suitable to different enviroment situation are gotten.4. A new method adding the coalescent during the process of polymerization was experimented. Compared to the traditional direct adding method it can not only simplify the preparation of the coating process, but also improve the efficiency of filming auxiliaries.
