The vitrified diamond abrasive tools is becoming one of the most potentialapplied tools in high speed, high efficiency and high precision machining industries. In this research, the vitrified bond for diamond abrasive tools was studied.R2O-B2O3-Al2O3-SiO2was chosen as the basic vitrified bond system in this study. Theeffects of composition and each component proportion of vitrified bond on theproperties of vitrified bond and vitrified diamond abrasive tools werecomprehensively discussed. The main properties including refractoriness, fluidity, thermal expansion coefficient of vitrified bond and bending strength, corrosionresistance of vitrified diamond abrasive tools were investigated. The results showed as follows:―mixed alkali effect‖of alkali oxides could beused to improve the mechanical strength of diamond abrasive tools. The incorporationof fluoride (Na3AlF6and CaF2) in appropriate amount could decrease therefractoriness, improve the fowing ability of vitrifed bond, and the mechanicalstrength, the corrosion resistance of diamond abrasive tools were also obviouslyenhanced. The improvement effect of Na3AlF6on the mechanical strength of diamondabrasive tools was more obvious than that of CaF2, but the samples with CaF2showedbetter corrosion resistance than that of Na3AlF6.In this part, four kinds of additives (SrO, Y2O3, SnO2, Bi2O3) were introducedinto the basic vitrified bond, respectively. The results showed that these additives allcould decrease the refractoriness, improve the fowing ability of vitrifed bond, andenhance the mechanical strength, the corrosion resistance of diamond abrasive tools.Comparing the influence of the four kinds of additives on the properties of vitrifiedbond, it could be concluded that the improvement effect on the bending strength ofdiamond abrasive tools was in the order of SnO2>Y2O3>Bi2O3>SrO, while thecorrosion resistance was Bi2O3>SnO2>Y2O3>SrO.Under multi-factor conditions, the influence of the mixture of four kinds ofadditives (Na3AlF6, SrO, SnO2, Bi2O3) on the properties of vitrified bond was studiedand the best material ratio of vitrified bond was determined. The bending strength ofthe samples with the best material ratio reached69MPa.
