Petroleum products, produced a large of combustion into the atmosphere, canresult in a large number of SO2, and especially some poor quality oil products hasbeen exacerbated by the pollution of the atmosphere, thus the monitoring of thequality of petroleum products is very necessary. Sulfur content is an important contentin petroleum products analysis, and is one of the important indexes to measure thequality of petroleum products. Sulfur of oil is of element sulfur, mercaptan, twosulfide, hydrogen sulfide, thioethers, thiophene and its homologues in other forms.Thequality of petroleum products mainly influences lubricity, anti oxygen, stability,corrosion resistance. But in some cases, the presence of sulfur is favorable, sometimesin order to improve the properties of oil products, some non-active sulfurs areintroduced as additive to improve lubricating of oil. Therefore, to strengthen thequality control of petroleum products, especially determination of sulfur content inproduction, scientific research and environmental protection are of great significance.Faced with this problem, the strict national standards of quality all over the worldhave been developed to control oil product, especially the sulfur content is a primaryindicator.The methods for determination of sulfur and mercaptan content were commonlydiscussed and comparably analyzed in this paper. These methods include GB/T380lamp method and SH/T0689UV fluorescence method, SH/T0174method andGB/T1792potentiometric titration, GB/T387tubular oven method. Through theresearch of test data and analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each method,a lot of differences were discovered among their applicable object, measurementrange, precision, anti-jamming performance, analysis speed etc. When selectedanalysis method, we should first consider high and low of contents in the samples,following practical measurement range of the method under the condition of theanalysis of error allowed, and the repeatability and reproducibility of the methods forindex, considering operation cost and simple degree and instrument case. The sulfur content and its analysis method have comprehensively been performedin this paper. And some shorts and merits have been discussed. Furthermore theprospect and some suggestion were pointed out.
