In order to ensure optimum operation of pipeline in the context of security, every aspectfrom the initial planning to the later operation and management, the dynamic variations of thepipeline must be grasped fully and in depth. Simulation technology of pipeline for longdistance pipeline provides a dynamic analysis tool for pipeline design, operation andmanagement, which brings enormous social and economic benefits for the pipeline industry atthe same time.Simulation technology for crude oil pipeline was applied to the operation of Wu-Yanpipeline, taking the particularity and the existing problems into consideration. The pipelinesimulation software SPS and the simulation program were used respectively in thesteady-state and the dynamic simulation for Wu–Yan pipeline.Field investigation on Wu-Yan pipeline was carried out, the operational parameters andthe device parameters were collected. Then the model for the pipeline simulation was builtwith SPS, and the reliability of the model was verified. The steady-state and the dynamicchanges of the oil pipeline were simulated after running the simulation model, the minimumoperating temperature was determined. Then the safe and economic transportation scheme forWu-Yan pipeline was formulated using the simulation model. The safe and economictransportation scheme can bring about energy saving and consumption reduction, which canreduce the operating cost.On basis of the safe and economic transportation scheme, the shutdown and restart of thepipeline were simulated with SPS, the changes of the temperature and pressure of the pipelinewere obtained, providing reference for the shutdown and restart in reality.The simulation program for oil pipeline was used to simulate the steady-state and theshutdown-and-restart of Wu-Yan pipeline, the results were in consistent with the actualoperational parameters. Comparison between the results of the steady-state and theshutdown-and-restart which obtained by the simulation software and the simulation programwas made, there a little difference between them. The thermal model applied by SPS is morepractical, it can also trace the dynamic flow changes closely, and the results are more precise. The mathematical models applied by the simulation system developed by programming needmore corrections and improvements.
