Electrochemical discharge machining (ECDM) is becoming aresearch hotspot as an effective processing method for non-conductivematerials. ECDM is featured with high processing efficiency, low cost, high flexibility. The research on ECDM is still in the basic phase, consequently more study is needed. In this paper, on the background ofdressing resin bonded diamond wheel, a more comprehensive study on theECDM performance of the resin material is conducted and relatedconclusions have been drawn, and ECDM experiments on resin bondedgrinding wheels are also carried out.Firstly, on the basis of the machining mechanism, a thermodynamicmodel is built. The finite element method is applied to analyze thetemperature field on the tool electrode, the workpiece and the toolelectrode effect on the workpiece. Simulation results reveal that resinmaterial can be processed by ECDM. According to the requirements, anexperiment platform is designed and constructed. Some relatedconclusions have been drawn from the experiments of different electrolyte, immersion depth and electrode diameter: NaCl solution is suitable forphenolic resin during ECDM; with a moderate electrode immersion depthand a small electrode diameter, a larger machining depth can be achieved. The full factorial experiments on voltage, electrolyte concentration andforce between electrode and workpiece are conducted, and someconclusions can be drawn: machining depth increases as the voltage, thecontact force between the tool electrode and the workpiece increases, and the increase of concentration will also add to the increase of machiningdepth; micrographs and energy spectrum analysis reveal the process howthe resin material is removed during ECDM; Finally the resin bondeddiamond wheel is processed with ECDM, and experiment results show thatit’s feasible to dress resin bond diamond wheel with ECDM. The researchprovides theoretical reference for further research on dressing of resinbond diamond wheel.
