Wetland plays an irreplaceable role in many aspects such as water source maintaining, climate adjustment, flood resistance, pollution control and biodiversity preservation. However, the shortage of water resources in wetland and ecological deterioration areserious issues we are facing nowadays. Managing the limited water resources well anddealing with the relationship between water resources and ecological environment well arethe foundation for the protection, management and utilization of wetlands. Therefore, weshould control the degeneration of wetland and effectively utilize and protect the waterenvironment of wetland, so as to realize the sustainable development of Baotou YellowRiver Wetland region. This study takes the wetland area of Yellow River in Baotou as theresearch background, evaluates its current situation of water quality and confirms the waterquality grade and the contamination status of different fracture surfaces. Aimed at analysisand calculation of ecological water demand of Baotou Yellow River Wetland which is inthe semi-arid area, the research provided scientific basis for the healthy development ofBaotou Yellow River Wetland.Firstly, measured the ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chemicaloxygen demand and dissolved oxygen in the water environment at Baotou Yellow RiverWetland during the wet season, the average water season and the dry season respectively, analyzed the influencing factors and evaluated them with identification index method. Asindicated in the findings, the major pollution indexes are total nitrogen and chemicaloxygen demand, which have the greatest amount of segments that outstrip the standard inlow water periods, followed by those in average water season and then those in wet season.Secondly, conducted a functionally achievable evaluation on the different functions ofdifferent districts of Yellow River wetland in Baotou, and analyzed the main pollutionindexes of different water bodies based on different using requirements. All water sourcescan meet the requirements for use, but that of Dengkou basically met the requirements forusing, but the water quality was under threat. Except some fishery waters in Chilechuan were damaged, other waters in animal husbandry, fishery, and agricultural irrigation areashave all met the requirements. Both Nanhai Lake and Xiaobai River fail to reach the waterquality requirements in natural reserved areas. Finally, according to water balance method, it analyzed the water demand of YellowRiver wetland in Baotou which is based on biological habitat, water demand of vegetationin different growth periods, and water demand for different ecological targets. The studyresult shows that the water demand to preserve the core area--the national wetland reserveof the Yellow River in Baotou is2.238×108m3. The water demand calculated in waterbalance method can ensure the ecological water requirement in the medium goal, and it hasgood consistency with water demand under ideal habitat condition. Moreover, it also has acertain surplus water volume that can ensure the periodic execution of the wetlandrestoration project.
