Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is a versatile way to construct thin film nanocomposites. Most commonly, this approach to fabrication of an interface involves multilayer ionic assembly of polyelectrolytes. These LbL processes are widely used for surface modification in which thin film surface grafts are assembled by alternating deposition of mutually attractive molecules or particles. Nonetheless, some applications are better served by more chemically robust multilayer grafts that withstand harsh conditions. Therefore, the role of covalent self-assembly is to be developed. It is a new alternative approach of organic multilayer grafts, the driving force of LbL assembly is based on chemical bonding between two polymers. Compare with other self-assembled multilayer films, the covalent multilayer grafts by this driving force has been greatly improved on the stability and mechanical strength."Click chemistry" with high yield and selectivity is undoubtedly an ideal driving force to multilayer grafts. Therefore, we will introduce the"click chemistry" based on Diels-Alder reaction to layer-by-layer assembly and research on the synthesis and layer-by-layer assembly of two polymers containing furan and maleimide side chain groups. In this paper, firstly, a strategy for synthesis a polymer containing furan side chain groups is designed. The synthesis method is O-etherication of polychloromethylstyrene with alcohol using phasetransfer catalysis. Secondly, a strategy for synthesis a polymer containing maleimide side chain groups is designed. The synthesis method is to synthesize maleimide polymer containing furan protecting groups, the furan’s protecting group is stripped, a polymer containing maleimide side chain groups is prepared. Finally, the compound for substrate modification is designed and synthesized and silica substrate is modified by this compound. Then layer-by-layer assembly of two polymers based on "click chemistry". During our experiments, we employe TLC to track the compound’s sythesis procedure and H-NMR FT-IR to identify the compounds, the resulting polymers were characterized by NMR GPC, multilayer assembly process is tracked by UV-Vis.
