China’s iron and steel industry to support the building up of "reinforced steel frame" plays an important role in the national economic development. In recent years, the domestic steel industry boomed. Major companies competed to expand production scale, product manufacturing costs became the focus of major steel companies, along with the increasingly fierce market competition. And its focus will naturally fall in the energy consumption which is the largest proportion of corporate controllable costs.In all kinds of energy consumption, the focus and studies on the fuel consumption and power consumption are so many, while research on water saving very little. In fact, the steel rolling production as an important part of iron and steel industry, relative to other production processes has a greater proportion of their water consumption. Especially the mill’s roller table cooling waters which are widely distributed and higher traffic but extensive full-time opened, there is serious waste.This paper aims to achieve Baosteel5000mm heavy plate mill’s roller table automatic control of cooling water, and to reduce the cooling consumption. Based on material tracking principles, calculation methods and the main function blocks in-depth research and the analysis of the problems existing, this paper improved tracking accuracy and reliability, making it able to meet the higher requirements for roller table cooling. On this basis, through the roller cooling group, occupation and control logic to determine the rules of research, design, combined with the upgrade part of the control valve and add controls and monitoring procedures, programming the roller table cooling waters of the automatic segmentation control. Final based on the adoption of innovative applications in the system’s flow testing program with zero-investment, the results of research passed the verification and benefit calculation.This research not only can cool the roller table "on-demand supply" and save lots of water resources, but also has some promotional prospects for the iron and steel companies. They can do some energy saving work based on the paper. Finally, the paper provides a brief analysis of energy saving for cooling water of the mill’s roller, high pressure water descaling transmission, and provides the direction for further research.
