Glass fiber reinforced aluminum composite laminates are made of glass fiberreinforced composites and high strength aluminum alloy sheet, which are alternatelyplied and cured by using bonding techniques at a specific temperature and pressure. It combines the advantages of both materials. Compared with aluminum single sheet, the quality of GLARE laminates is lighter, fatigue properties are better. With respectto the glass fiber composite panels, GLARE laminates have better both processingperformance and impact performance. In order to meet the inspection, disassembly, maintenance and other needs, there are often variety of machined holes, which rivetholes are in the majority, in the laminate. These holes significantly affect themechanical properties of GLARE laminates.According to the distance between the impact location and the hole, we marshalthe three types of GLARE laminates into five groups. After impacting laminates, wecome to the conclusion that with the hole moving away from the impact position, themaximum load GLARE Laminates withstand increased, the final absorbing impactenergy becomes smaller, the time to complete impact damage deformation becomesshorter, in addition, the maximum displacement and the final displacement afterimpacting becomes smaller. The above results indicate that the influence of thecircular hole on impact resistance performance of laminates becomes smaller, andwhen the distance reaches20mm, the influence has been basically zero.Based on the ABAQUS/CAE software, a finite element model is established byusing three-dimensional Hashin damage criterion and the gradual failure analysismethod. We have established a finite element model of GLARE laminates under thesame load with experimental conditions and simulated it. By comparing the resultsbetween the simulation and experiment, we found that the degree of matchingbetween the two is very high, so the modeling method described in this paper isreasonable. In the application of the finite element model above, the impact of different sized punch impact on performance laminates were studied, meanwhile, a predictivefinite element simulation about the influences of the laminates with different layupon the impact performance of GLARE laminates with holes is simulated, we foundthat for the same kind of laminates, the larger the size of the punch is, the betterimpact performance of laminates is. And for different plies ways, the impactperformance of cross-plied laminates is the best.
