The correction fluid was firstly invented and used by Chinese all aroundthe world. According to the literature and physical data, correction fluid waswidely used to cover and correct clerical errors or typographical errors no laterthan the beginning from the Wei and Jin Dynasties in China. Through theliteratures, existing physical data, analysis of testing data and simulationexperiment etc. existing correction fluid samples in different periods wereanalyzed with non-destructive or micro damage analysis technology bythree-dimensional microscopy, laser confocal Raman spectrometer andenergy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to observe the micromorphology characteristics, analyze the cause, determine the maincompositions and study the materials and manufacturing technology.Experimental results showed that the orpiment (As2S3) was the maincomponent in Chinese traditional yellow correction fluid, the white lead(2PbCO3·Pb(OH)2) was the main component in Chinese traditional whitecorrection fluid on a120-year-old Chinese book page from the famous revisedand printed Gujin Tushu Jicheng (the Imperial Encyclopedia). and the titaniumdioxide (TiO2) was the main component in modern white correction fluid.According to the detailed records of "Qi Min Yao Shu", the materials andtechnology of ancient correction fluid were further understood, ancientcorrection fluid simulation experiment was completed, the technology ofmaking correction fluid was recovered, and its correlation property includingaridity, wettability and covering power was tested. In this paper, according tothe materials and technology of development and change of ancient andmodern correction fluid in different periods, we preliminarily discuss the origin,development and evolution of correction fluid. Based on the theories oftraditional materials and techniques, traditional correction fluid could be copiedor even improved. Therefore, both experimental evidences and references to develop a safe environmental friendly type of correction fluid could beobtained.
