At present, China is the world’s second-largest energy consumer after the UnitedStates. In the total energy consumption, the transportation industry accounted for onethird. So, under the double pressures of the energy crisis and global warming, thegovernment had decided to implement the policies of researching and developingrenewable energy and promoting energy-saving vehicles. Therefore, the biodieseindustry arose and caused the public concentration.The study included: first of all, characteristics and preparation methods at home andabroad of biodiesel were reviewed; the biodiesel’s economic, power and combustion-emission identities were analyzed when it was used on diesel engine as fuel; then, thebiodiesel industry development situation was analyzed from three respects of policy,state and significance; some strategies and suggestions were put forward to solve theobstacles in industry; what’s more, the applicability of CDM methodology ACM0017and was interpreted; and its calculation procedure of carbon emission reductions werestudied; finally, the specific actual case of biodiesel project was taken as research object,carbon emission reductions were calculated and its factors were analyzed.The results showed that:(1) currently, the main preparation method of biodieselindustry is acid and alkali catalysis. And the new technologies are only at the test stage.Such as super-critical fluid method, ionic liquids method, microwave method and others,which will achieve large-scale industrialized production, still need further study.(2)According to Chinese national condition, in the short term, country advocates thewaste oil as the raw material by esterification process to produce biodiesel. So, thedevelopment of biodiesel industry, not only is helpful for relieving the energy crisis,regulating and controlling industrial structure, protecting the ecological environment andguaranteeing the safety of the food, but also makes out great contributions forgreenhouse gas emission reductions.(3)63,000tons of waste oil can be produced60,000tons of biodiesel and149,451tCO2emission reductions are generated when CDMmethodology ACM0017is used to calculate.(4) Factors affecting carbon emissionsmainly include the kinds and supply of raw materials, production ability, the net calorificvalue of biodiesel, the high efficiency of catalysts and transport distance. The study’s purpose was mainly to provide reference for calculating carbonemission reductions of biodiesel project and technical support for “reportable,measurable, verifiable” carbon-market trading system.
