In this paper, the CTS-IA-AA terpolymer was prepared by aqueous solutionpolymerization, using water soluble chitosan (CTS), itaconic acid (IA) and acrylic acid(AA) as raw materials. And on this basis, the copper ions adsorption performance ofpolymer was investigated. The main research contents were:1. CTS-IA-AA terpolymer was prepared in in aqueous solution by using graftpolymerization of chitosan (CTS), itaconic acid (IA) and acrylic acid (AA) asmaterials and choosing appropriate reagents as initiators. The influences of reactiontime and temperature, initiator concentration and type and monomer ratio on thepolymer yield were investigated in details. By the single factor test, the optimumsynthesis conditions of the terpolymer were obtained:6h of reaction time,40℃ofreaction temperature,15%of initiator concentration and CTS:IA:AA=10:7:3, and thepolymer yield reached the maximum71.46%.2. The polymer obtained in the best synthesis condition was characterized byFTIR, and the result indicated that the graft polymerization of itaconic acid (IA) andacrylic acid (AA) onto the molecular chain of chitosan reacted.3. The terpolymer obtained was characterized by TG, and the experimental resultshowed that the terpolymer was excellent in thermal property and acceptable as a watertreatment chemical.4. The terpolymer obtained was characterized by SEM, and the result indicatedthat the surface morphology of the polymer became denser and more porous. It contributed to the coordination of heavy metal ions.5. The polymer adsorption property for Cu2+was tested by FAAS. The adsorptioncapacity of the polymer for Cu2+was124mg/g when CTS:IA:AA=10:7:3.The result showed that the formed CTS-IA-AA terpolymer could effectively solveissues that chitosan dissolving in water lost easily and hard to recycle. And thepolymer had excellent adsorption property for Cu2+.
