The water pollution from the industrial production is increasingly serious with the global economy spring up. Water pollution is mainly caused by the oil spill during the transportation, untreated waste water discharge from the industry, and the arbitrary disposal of domestic water. However, the deteriorating of water would have serious impact on the human daily life and industrial development. Therefore, the water puri-fication had attracted quite a lot of attention. Filter, which is one main application for porous ceramic in separation and purification for treatment of waste water, was used. Although the filter has been developed for many years, the further research of the fil-ter is still needed. Diatomite, which is a sedimentary rock, formed from accumulation of siliceous crusts of diatoms. It has excellent absorption capacity because of its por-ous structure and high surface area. In addition, it is abundance. Therefore, it is prom-ising to develop the diatomite-based filter and investigate the mechanism for filtra-tion.In this study, the diatomite was investigated. The diatomite-based filter is pre-pared, and the mechanical property is optimized through the design of components, shaping and sintering. By analyzing the phase, morphology, mechanical property and filtration performance, the impact of sintering temperature and the content of pore-forming agent on the properties of mechanics and filtration were invested. The main conclusions of this study are as following:1. The diatomite-based filter was prepared by uniaxial pressing shaping using pore-forming.2. The mechanical property was influence by sintering temperature and the context of pore-forming agent. When the sintering temperature varied from900℃to1100℃, the bend strength increase as the content of pore-forming agent decrease. 3. As the content of pore-forming agent from0wt.%to20wt.%., the property of fil-tration was decreased.4.0.69μm is the minimum value that the particle size allowed to pass through the diatomite-based filter prepared in this work.5. The lipophilic change to the hydrophilic by modification of diatomite using chlo-rosilane. And the separation between water and oil may be achieved by the surface modification of diatomite.
