With the development of society, it is required the machine has better performance. The light-weight structural design can make the machine tools’supports be of small weight (mass) and high stiffness. With the help of computer tools the design of supports including structural design and performance analysis has become an inevitable trend for the light-weight structural design of machine tools’ supports.The article is based on the research group project. Structure characteristics and constraint of one boring support is analyzed, finite element load is calculated, configuration of the column structure is designed based on topology optimization, static performance analysis and evaluation method of design is studied. The main contents are as follows:1. The structure of the main components is analysed. Taking the gantry column of a boring as an example,the cutting load is computed in a appropriate method, the finite element load is calculated depending on the different conditions. The equivalent method of column and bed joint surface based on finite element model contact theory is studied. Sensitivity of the static performance computing is analyzed.2. Static performance is computed based on the established support’s physical model.This provides a basis for the design of the new structure after topology optimization.3. Based on weighted multi-position conditions, topology optimization model of gantry column is established. With topology optimization calculated by OptiStruct analysis software, optimum material distribution of column including multi-condition is gained.With "concept-unit" method, the configuration of the column structure is designed based on topology optimization results.4. Static deformation data is analyzed based on the principle of Saint-Venant.Then feasibility of data processing is tested using units model. Parametric evaluation model is established, fine structure is selected according to the parametric evaluation model.Size optimization of the fine structure is completed to achieve further lightweight design.
