For the tin tailing dam (GuanJiashan tailing dam) in GeJiu, using multiple methods of grain sizes analysis, X-ray powder diffractometry testing, major elements testing and trace elements testing etc, has comprehensive studied characteristics of the chemical components, the mineral components, occurrence and contents of valuable components. With heavy metal elements testing of Shallow groundwater and soil around tailing dam, discussing the characteristics of the spatial distribution of elements in tailing dam, and its environmental impacts. These study have reached the following conclusions:(1) It is found that Carbonate、diopside and quartz are the main minerals in tailing, content of metal mineral is less than3%(the main metal minerals are pyrite、chalcopyrite and magnetie, limonitization;the hematite、arsenopyrite and cassiterite also are visible). Sorting of minerals largely determines the distribution of elements. Along the direction of the tailings discharge, elements can be divided into3zone:(S,Au,Fe,Te)'(CaO)'(K2O,Re,Sn,SiO2,T1).(2)The element contents of Si、Fe、S are high in the tin tailing dam (GuanJiashan tailing dam) in GeJiu, and they occur in quartz(contain sercite),pyrite and chalcopyrite in the form of independent minerals. Because quartz’s(contain sercite) density is very low, its enrichment position is far away from dam. On the contrary, the density of Fe,S (occur in pyrite and chalcopyrite in the form of independent minerals) are high, they enrich at the dam.(3) GuanJiashan tin tailing dam is In the primary stage of weathering. Generally speaking, quartz and silicate mineral structure is stable, the elements in they is not easy to release and migration. The supergene geochemical process of heavy metal elements(such as Cu) in the sulphides is strong. So the heavy metals(Cu) are easy to release and migration. Because Fe is not easy to migration, its Element contents is higher than Cu and S at the bottom of the tailing.(4)Sn、Pb、Zn、Cu、 In have reached the industrial-grade. Through statistical, GuanJiashan tailing dam have112000t Sn,120000t Pb,140000t Zn,67000t Cu,38.4t In etc. metal potential resource. This tailing dam has high recycling value.(5) Shallow groundwater and soil around tailing dam are all polluted by heavy metals. Because the environment around GuanJiashan tailing dam is alkaline-deoxidation, the oxidation-dissolution is not strong. As time goes on, the heavy metals is enriched around the tailing dam、smelter and mining pits, and the heavy metal elements in soil are more active.
