The condensed polynuclear aromatic (COPNA) resins have excellent good heat resistance, good formability, and have a strong affinity for carbon materials, and special electromagnetic properties. COPNA resins can be used for the binder of carbon/carbon composites, brake wear-resistant materials, high-quality heat-resistant fiber and other carbon materials. In this paper, the high-performance COPNA resins were obtained from coal liquefaction heavy organics. The main achievements are as follows.COPNA resins were synthesized using coal heavy organic components as raw material, p-xylylene glycol (PXG) as cross-linking agent, sulfuric acid as catalyst. The effects of crosslinker, catalyst, reaction temperature, reaction time and type of catalyst and different concentrations of the catalyst (sulfuric acid as catalyst) on the properties of COPNA resins were investigated systematically. The properties and component of the resins were evaluated by infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, toluene insolubles, quinoline insolubles, carbon residue, content of P resin, and weight loss. The results show that the obtained COPNA resins using50%H2SO4as catalyst, heated at160癈for2.5h under nitrogen, possess58wt.%content of presin and50wt.%weight loss. And the10%weight loss temperature is525癈.
