Tool presetting instrument known as tool auto-checking instrument, is the tool detectionequipment that integrates optical, computers and precision measurement technology. Thispaper designs the system architecture for Tool presetting instrument, including hardware partsand software parts. According to the measurement parameters and measurement indicators,tool presetting instrument is divided into three parts, namely electromechanical parts, opticalpart and computer parts. And a detailed analysis and introduction of that is presented,especially for the optical part.This paper aims to improve the clarity of the picture during the measurement, thusproceeding from the optical system. The focus of this paper is to study the impact of the threefactors: the selection of the focusing evaluation function, the focusing window and thefocusing searching strategy, which have a great influence on focusing. First of all, due to avariety of focusing evaluation functions and the effect varies in that characteristics of themeasured object are different, the purpose of this paper is to find a suitable focusingevaluation function of tool presetting instrument through analysis and compare of severalkinds of focusing evaluation functions. Secondly, because of the focusing will be affected bythe size and the area of the focusing window, we improved the original inverted T-typefocusing window to the one that is suitable for nose shape of inverted L-type focusing window.Finally, the selection of the focusing search strategy is a critical step. This paper mainlystudies the auto-focusing technology in two ways: the focus depth method and the defocusdepth method. This paper integrates a method that can overcome the slow of the focus depthmethod and the low precision of the defocus depth method given the drawback of the two.Firstly, it uses the defocus depth method to narrow the focus range greatly. And then it usesthe focus depth method to find the best focus position.This paper designs the tooling measurement test rig. The data got through a series offocusing experiment shows the feasibility of this method, which provides a basis for solvingthe engineering problems.
