As one of basic natural resources and strategic economic resources, water resources are indispensable to economic development. Research on the contribution of water resources to economic in quantitative analysis way is a hotspot in water resources economics, which is also a major practical problem, ought to be taken into account while a strategic decision about enormous water conservancy engineering would be made. This study is financially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China "Research on ecological economic value of regional water resources based on emergy theory" (NO.50879081). Emergy theory and method is applicated to explore the quantitative analysis method of water resources contribution to economic product. The main researches are as follows:(1) The research status of the contribution of water resources to economic product as well as the application of emergy analysis method on water resources field are summarized based on reviewing literatures at home and abroad, and the current research deficiency and development tendency in the future are stated briefly.(2) The energy flow and transform discipline of water resources in economic system is analyzed and the mechanism of water resources in the process of economic running is revealed from the eco-economic angle, on the basis of the analysis above and the common meaning of "contribution", the concept of water resources contribution to economic product is proposed.(3) Based on the emergy theory, the energy networks in eco-economic system as well as subsystems such as agricultural and industrial are constructed. The indices of contribution of water to economics, for instance, water resources contribution quantity and water resources contribution rate, are proposed with the uniform and scientific standard-Emergy.(4) According to the meaning of the water resources contribution to economic product and emergy analysis method, the analyze method of water resources contribution to economic product is proposed. The major steps included:firstly, main parameters such as emergy dollar rate and emergy transiformity of water resources was calculated; secondly, the agricultural an industrial energy network were constructed; thirdly, indices of water resources contribution to agricultural and industrial subsystems were calculated; finally, the contribution of water resources to economic product is summarized.(5) The application is carried out in Zhengzhou city as a case study, the water contribution quantity and water contribution rate are calculated for past 8 years from 2000 to 2007.(6) Combining the theory and application research results, the content of the whole research work is summarized and the suggestions about subsequent research are presented.
