Vietnam and China are two countries which are closely related in terms geography, therefore, there are numerous similarities in their citizens'ways of living as well as their expenditures, cultures and religions. Throughout the history, the introduction of Chinese alternative medicine into Vietnam has made various contributions to the economic and cultural exchange of the two countries, which has also helped improved Vietnamese medical development. Thanks to that, Vietnamese people, basing on their own knowledge and the experience of the oriental medicine (Chinese medicine mainly) gradually established a medical system rich in national identity-Vietnamese traditional medicine. While Chinese medicine has been brought to Vietnam, Vietnamese medicine has also been continuously introduced to China. Even though this introduction was made officially or through its people, medical materials have always been the main commodity in trade between the two countries. Commercial activities in medical materials have always played an important part in trade between Vietnam and China so far, especially in border areas. Both Vietnam and China highly appreciate the development of traditional medical systems. Especially to a country that has developed later than others as Vietnam, and in an advantageous context when China-ASEAN trade area is formed, learning from Chinese experience and boosting the development of the modernization of Chinese traditional medicine are important to the improvement of Vietnamese traditional medicine. While researches on Vietnamese traditional medicine are acknowledged from Chinese'perspectives, this study is based on the viewpoint of a Vietnamese researcher. It overviews materials on Vietnamese traditional medicine's development, foreign trade and researches, analyses and generalizes the development trend of Chinese and Vietnamese medicine as well as gives examples on China, Japan and South Korea's foreign trade. Through the contrastive analysis of the development of such aspects as the origin of medicine and medical materials, the developing process of each sector, management system, developing policies and so on, it is seen that the two countries'medicine and pharmacy complement each other and have great cooperative potentials. Vietnam is the country with later development, therefore, it should on its own choose the policy of putting China as the focal point, cooperating and boosting the development of traditional medicine and pharmacy. On that basis, together with concentrating on the cooperation of traditional medical systems of the two countries, I have made three suggestions. Firstly, cooperation and coordination between Vietnamese and Chinese governments should be started. Secondly, investment on Vietnamese traditional medicine should be boosted. And finally, cooperation on education, science and technology of traditional medicine and pharmacy should be improved.
