The study area of this paper lies in the plain of the Peacock River Basin in Xinjiang. From 1973 to 2000, the development of Water resources and Land has a great impact on the ecological environment, Land Use/Cover Types have undergone tremendous changes. By interpreting three remote sense images of the study area (1973MSS, 1990TM , 2000ETM), basic data about area of the Land Use/Cover Type of the basin in the last three periods are extracted. On the basis of these data , we carries out analyses on the proportion of Land Use/Cover Type, the dynamic degree of single land use, the dynamic degree of synthesis land use ,the synthesis index of land use degree , ecosystem services value.Through these analyses , the results shows as follows. (1) In 1973, grassland, woodland , and saline land were the main land use/cover type in the basin. In 1990 and 2000 , grassland, agricultural land , and saline land became the main land use/cover type in the basin. (2) The total tendency of land use/cover change in the study area from 1973 to 2000 is that: the area of agricultural land , residental land, and grassland increased even more; the area of woodland , waters, saline land decreased pretty more; the area of gobi and swampland decreased correspondingly less ;the area of desert and exposed rock land was invariant on the whole. (3) In the entire period of study, the change of land use/cover type and the transform between each land use/cover type in the study area are much severe; the degree of land use enhanced with years, study area were in the period of expansion which the intensity of land development gradually enhanced, the total ecosystem services value of the study area decreased clearly in the entire period of study.
