In supply chain management environment, the end-user response time depends on the time consumed by the whole process of SC, instead of a single link. So holistic time optimization should be considered. But it doesn't mean that the time consumed by any link should be treated equally. The holistic time optimization of supply chain depends on the weakest link (namely the time bottleneck) on which attention should be focused to make a remarkable improvement.Through studying the meanings, the calculation models of main SC time performance indices and the interrelation between them, this dissertation firstly pointed out the"Total Cycle Time"was critical to SC time performance, and should be treated as the main object of SC time compression. Secondly, the concept of time bottleneck and the quantitative method to identify possible time bottlenecks were presented. Through comparing with the concept of bottleneck in Operation Management, the dissertation described four types of time bottlenecks: capacity bottleneck, non-value added bottleneck, scheduling bottleneck and interface bottleneck. The cause of time bottlenecks was discussed. Based on the identification of possible time bottlenecks, two evaluation models for enterprises to identify the critical time bottleneck were built. Value model focuses on evaluating the improvement in the throughput and Total Cycle Time after eliminating the bottleneck, while Matrix model can be used to evaluate the time bottlenecks that are difficult to evaluate quantitatively. Finally, the structured procedure and general techniques related to time bottleneck eliminating were proposed.
