Keeping in mind that China is the World Factory, the independent innovation and development of design methodologies for product platforms and families contribute significantly to the update of manufacturability. After investigating the research work presented so far refers to mass customization, Guoning Qi comes to the conclusion that a limit in current product design is the inadequacy of robust design methodologies with overall-local co-optimization modeling technology. The overall-local optimization method and model are researched based on summarizing relative theory in the paper, the main content is:Firstly, the background and importance of this research is expounded, the interrelated theory about mass customization, product family designing and collaborative optimization are then summarized.Secondly, the concept and characteristics of overall-local collaborative optimization existed in product design are introduced. There are many problems of overall-local collaborative optimization not only in single product design, but also in product family design. Two different methods for solving this problem are proposed.Thirdly, the method and model of integral leader-follower optimization which is the one method to solve the problem of overall-local optimization are introduced. The main framework and assistant technique of the integral leader-follower optimization are described. Two solutions and models based on whether lower decision-maker is associated are presented in the last.Fourthly, the globe-element coupling optimization, which is another method to solve the overall-local optimization problem, is expounded. The relationship of subsystems optimization which is not associated and global optimization is discussed, the conditions on which independent optimizations of subsystems are equal to global optimization of systems are presented and proved. This paper also presents a globe-element coupling optimization model for large scale system which is composed of various coupled subsystems. Kuhn-Tucker theorem is used to justify the validity of the above model.Fifthly, the models and methods studied in this paper are applied to the realistic mechanical product optimization.
