The economic development of China relies mostly on the development of the enterprises. What's more, the technology and institution innovation and the improvement of the production capacity of enterprises is the key point for economic transition of the whole country. After a systematically collection and summery of the related research on the production efficiency of the enterprises, this paper gives a detailed empirical research on the production efficiency of the enterprises through Bernard and Jensen Model and System GMM model, on the basis of the data from the enterprises in the textile industry in Zhejiang province from 2000 to 2003. This paper supplies better understanding of the internal mechanism between the export trade and improvement of the enterprises' productivity, which provides a new perspective and empirical evidence for identifying the sources of the improvement of the enterprises' production capacity. This paper gets the conclusions that exporting enterprises are more competitive than non-exporting enterprises in productivity. The total factor productivity of the exporting enterprises is 10.83% higher than that of non-exporting enterprises. However, the advantages of exporting enterprises are different according to the scales of the enterprises and forms of ownership. For the SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises), exporting is a better way to improve the productivity. On the other hand, this paper examines two different ways to improve the exporting advantages of enterprises: self-selection and learning by exporting. We get the conclusion that with the interaction between self-selection and learning by exporting, the level of the enterprises' productivity is becoming an important factor which influences the exporting strategies of enterprises and can be improved from learning by exporting. On the basis of theoretical and empirical analysis, this paper displays that developing the export trade is an important way for the enterprises in developing countries to push their technology progress by learning and imitation and thus to improve their productivity. However, before that, the domestic enterprises must have capacities of learning and absorbing skills. The enterprises' choice of trade should consider the productivity level. Therefore, it's extremely important to improve the core competence of SMEs by taking full advantage of the market, obtaining the competitive advantage of economic factors by synergistic effect, enlarging the production frontier of enterprises. In the long-term, with the comparative advantage weakens and the industry development becomes mature in the process of transition, accumulating the human capital, developing the capacity of independent research and improving the technology innovation are the most important ways for the transformation and upgrading of Chinese enterprises.
