Citibank is now one of the world's most powerful and influential banks. In the course of its expanding and strengthening, the most important principle is cooperating with the America government.China is an important investment place in Citibank's expansion and development history. Since entering China as the first American bank in 1902, Citibank had participated in a variety of loans and investments toward China with the support of government in less than 30 years Which not only winning a place for the bank but seeking a large number of privileges and enhancing the impact for the U.S. government in China. Citibank's success in China was inseparable with United States government's support while United States' advancement in China also benefited from the support of Citibank. The mode of co-operation of financial institutions and government is important method and typical characteristic in the way of seeking economic expansion for America.The thesis includes two parts with introduction and the text.The introduction overviews Citibank's brief history of evolvement and investment activities in China, explains the significance and the present research situation of this subject, also introduces some related concepts and terms presented during the study.The text is divided into four chapters.Chapter one focuses on the background and course of Citibank's entering China. Through the origin analysis of establishing overseas banks of the United States for many years and the process of its trying in China, explain the significance for the U. S. which bring by Citibank's entering China.Chapter two and chapter three describe the Citibank's major activities in China. Chapter two describes its participation in the loans to China including administrative, railway, industrial loans and so on with the support of the government through which won a great deal of privileges in China for the United States. The third chapter discusses Citibank's other direct investment business activities such as setting up Tsinghua University, sending Chinese students to study in the United States, relieving the widespread distress caused by the drought in North China and dredging the Huai River. These activities improved the status of Citibank in China as well as greatly improved the United States in Chinese image.Chapter four is the part of analysis and conclusion. Through researching the interaction between Citibank's development strategy since inception as well as the business activities in China with the U.S. government, make the conclusion that the decisive role Citibank played as an important financial institutions in the United States government's foreign policy and the necessity of government's support in Citibank's external expansion.
