Comment On Dos Santos' Concept Of Dependency

In Imperialism and Dependency, Brazilian economist Dos Santos makes a systematic and authoritative exposition about the concept of dependency, resolves the long-standing problem that lacks the dependency concept in the dependency theory, and develops and perfects the theoretical system of dependency thought.Dos Santos' exposition about the concept of dependency makes us understand what the dependency is clearly. The so-called dependency is a kind of condition, which is that some countries' economy are enslaved to another country' development and expansion. The interpretation of the concept is generally accepted and widely used by Dependency Theory Schools, and also recognized as one of the most important theoretical contributions about dependency theory which is made by Dos Santos.However, because of the economic development in the countries of the world and the study of dependency thought by Theory Schools, many theoretical weaknesses in the study process of dependency concept were discovered by scholars. So it is criticized and questioned by many theoretical scholars, and the study about dependency became trapped.In recent years, many countries in the world are suffered a severe economic crisis. In order to get rid of the disaster, the developed countries shift the burden of crisis on to the developing counties. This makes developing countries encounter even greater impact, and becomes trapped in an unprecedented dilemma of development. Scholars discover the heavy disaster in hiding which is brought by dependency, so we must research the dependency problem, and explain the concept of Dos Santos' dependency again, and evaluate it objectively. The main task of this article is to discuss the dependency problem in the background of the new colonialism, and comment on Dos Santos' concept of dependency objectively. The article is divided into five parts. Foreword is briefly to discuss the historical background to the new colonialism and academia' study condition about the problem, thus elicits the study of dependency concept by Dos Santos. The second part is mainly to talk about the historical background, developing process and the research value of dependency concept. The third part is to analyze the dependency concept from Dos Santos' perspective. The fourth part is mainly to analyze the hot topic in the dependency dilemma and the limitation in the study of dependency concept objectively. The conclusion is mainly to have a systematic summary on the analysis of Dos Santos' dependency concept in this article.Although there are many weakness in the Dos Santos' research process, we must agree that Dos Santos makes use of the Marxist basic method to research and analyze the dependency condition in the new colonialism, and enhance the explanation ability about the new historical reality by the Marxism on certain degree. So we must clear that any theory' formation has a relation with concrete history condition and also has historical limitation; any theory' formation has the valuation for its existence and can achieve new development with continual criticism and query.
