In this paper the pertaining research on stress wave is made in the course of explosion and smash of shrapnel. Shrapnel is made of many materials and its structure seems to be axial symmetry. It is based on the interaction of stress wave in medium and the law of reflection and penetration when stress wave encounters an interface of dissimilar medium or an unequal section. By establishing a sound taper bar model whose section is made of different materials and different areas and taking the practical theory of single dimension linear stress wave into account, this paper analyzes in detail the influence rule of many factors such as main parameters of load, structure and materials on the smash process and propagation of stress wave during the transitory explosion of dynamite. In order to make explosion and smash of shrapnel safe, successful and meet designed strategy demand, we have gained some useful results by means of numerical calculation, which may be certain reference of engineering application contributing to later design of shrapnel.
