In recent years, along with the high-speed development of computer, remote sensing, photographic survey technique and other correlative techniques, the existing geographic information systems chiefly describe two dimension space information and the mass hyperspace information could not get used, so it is necessary to study the three dimension visualization system of geographic information. From the end of 1980s, the 3D visualization system of geographic information has been the research hotspot. Its research scope involves database, geographic information system, geographic information visualization, computer graphics and virtual reality etc. The 3D visualization system of geographic information studies three dimension space and possesses the capacity to build the pattern from express, manage, operate and analyse information of 3D objects. The object that the 3D visualization system of geographic information deals with changes to 3D from 2D, not only the data quantity being enlarged, but also a lot of different object type and space relationship emerging. So it is necessary to systematically study the spacial model analyzing, the structure of space database and 3D data visualization.The foundation of the 3D visualization system of geographic information is GIS, geographic information visualization, 3D expression technique, space data processing and the object-oriented programming method. According to the object-oriented programming method, this paper analyses above-mentioned theory and techniques systematically after having examined the current application of the 3D visualization system of geographic information in domestic and overseas. This paper puts forward the model for application research and the design scheme of the 3D visualization system of geographic information. On this basis, this paper systematically analyses the space data acquisition, error analysis of data and the database design etc. Finally, on the basis of OpenGL, this paper designs and develops the 3D visualization system of geographic information of Zhengzhou engineering college by the object-oriented technique and modularization programming method. The major content of this paper is as follows:1. After having analyzed the research application of the 3D visualization system of geographic information in domestic and overseas, this paper puts forward the model for application research on the 3D visualization system of geographic information, and points out that the traditional GIS is the foundation of the 3D visualization system of geographic information; Geographic information visualization has thoroughly changed the single way of the traditional GIS in expressing and transferring spacial information with the aid of text, graph and table. It can realize the following function, geographic data visualization, the vivid thematic map expression, visualization query, special analysis result's visualization, map animation and the 3D visualization expression of geographic information. The 3D expression technique is the core of the 3D visualization system of geographic information and the key for upgrading the traditional GIS to 3D GIS.2. According to the researchful characteristic of the 3D visualization system of geographic information in domestic and overseas, this paper puts forward the concrete system development scheme and analyzes the function of various parts of system. This paper points out that the key of designing the system is the database design of space data and the choice about the basal terrace of GIS as well as the 3D visualization software. In accordance with the characteristic of abundant space data content of geographic information, massive data capacity and widely involved domain etc, this paper puts forward the corresponding method of database design, discusses the basal terrace of GIS and puts forward the scheme that powerful and easily-used Maplnfo serves as the basal terrace of the 3D visualization system of geographic information.
