In this paper, we get the distribution of the desert and sandy desertification lands in the north of Ordos basin by the '3S' technique using the ETM remote sensing data, in order to get the distribution, remote sensing image processing, information extraction, image interpretation and surveying outdoors must be done. Based on the distribution and the research of predecessors, we analyse the characters of distribution and familiarize the new tectonic movement in the research area, then discuss the relation between desertification and new tectonic movement, here fractal structure and dimension frequency distribution are first used.Several conclusions are drawed:1. The changes in global climate and local climate are climate background of the formation, development and evolution of desertification, which caused by the uplifting of Tibet Plateau and the non-uniform lifting of the area respectively.2. The formation and evolution of rivers and lakes has a close relation with the distribution and development of desertification. Distribution of sandy deposit, reappearsing of ancient aeolian sand, desertification lands' extending direction and development are all controlled by rivers and lakes, which affected by new tectonic movement.3. The new tectonic movement make some area eroded, while other area undergo deposition in the north of Ordos basin, which controlled the distribution, formation and evolution of the sandy desertification lands.4. The new tectonic movement is the main factor leading to the characters of fractal structure and dimension frequency distribution of desertification lands.
