The fourth aquifer of Cenozoic strata, named as "4th aquifer", contacts with coal-bearing strata in Sunan mining area in the north of Anhui province. "4th aquifer" is dangerous to the safety mining of the shallow coal seams, which has important influence on reserving the height of the rational coal-rock pillars. So, researching hydrogeologic characteristics of "4th aquifer" soundly and systematically is very important. Firstly, based on referring to a lot of literatures involving the bottom aquifer researches and the studied methods when determining the height of anti-groundwater coal-rock pillars in our country and abroad, hydrogeologic characteristics are analyzed systematically, including dynamic characteristics of groundwater and the hydrogeologic unit of the investigated area. Moreover, hydrogeologic conception model and mathematical model of "4th aquifer" are built in this mining area. The international advanced software Visual Modflow4.0 is used to identify hydrogeologic parameters of "4th aquifer" in Qidong mine and in Taoyuan mine. Secondly, the mathematical model identified is used to forecast dynamical changes of "4th aquifer" water table in Qidong mine and Taoyuan mine under the bumping of groundwater above the coal seam. Besides, the analytic method is used to analyze "4th aquifer" water in Qinan mine. The forecast results provide a basis for accurately estimating water-enrichment in different areas. Thirdly, based on the relationship between sedimentary facies and water-enrichment of "4th aquifer" and the simulated results under different schemes of pumping water under the mine, the mining area is divided into sections abounding with groundwater mostly, partially and rarely. Finally, hydrochemical compositions of different water resources of inrush aquifers are analyzed in this mining area. Fuzzy pattern recognition method is used to distinguish different water sources of the inrush and "4th aquifer" water prevention methods are put forward.
