The development of modern scientific instruments is the foundation of the development of science. With the rapid advancement of the technologies of microelectronic, computer, laser, optical fibre, biological engineer etc, the bio instrument has been developed quickly. At present, among the conventional analytical methods, optical analysis is the most popular, and particularly, the laser-induced fluorescence technology (LIF) has become the most promising methods applied in bio instruments. Therefore, in this thesis, the LIF technology and its applications in bio instruments will be inextenso dissertated, and especially, the innovative idea of applying LIF technology in the automatic separation equipment for marine meiobenthos will be introduced. The framework of the thesis has been arranged as following. In the first chapter, the conventional optical analytical methods were packed up and compared. In the second chapter, the idea of applying LIF technology in the automatic separation equipment for marine meiobenthos was brought forward. In the third chapter, the theory and elements of LIF technology were introduced in detail. In the forth chapter, the design and implement of the optical system of the automatic equipment was presented at large, and a mathematical model was used to analyse the signal influencing factors. In the fifth chapter, the data obtained from experiments were charted and analysed to illustrate the feasibility and efficiency of applying LIF. In the last chapter, the achievements of this thesis were concluded and the prosper foreground of LIF technology applied in bio instruments was depicted. Now, the LIF technology has been developed well, and widely applied in many fields. Compared with other conventional detecting methods, LIF technology has the advantages of easy set-up, high sensitivity and resolving ability. Though there are still problems to research profoundly, there are aspects to improve and perfected in the automatic equipment design, the success of developing such a set of system will be of great value in thedevelopment of other instruments with the similar principle.
