As an important branch of anthropology, ecological anthropology focuses on the relationship among nature, culture and human. New ecological anthropology is a new trend of ecological anthropology in recent 20 years. By rejecting the view of understanding culture only as the tool by which people adapt to local environment and satisfy their material needs by old ecological anthropology represented as culture ecology and system ecology, it has put forward new points about the relationship between environment and culture: It is not environment determines culture, but culture imagines and constructs environment. Environment can be seen as the product of people's social & historical practices and the embodiment of ideas' effects upon material things. This new trend has also refused the traditional research mode of " culture island", and paid more attention to the effects of modernization and globalization upon local environment.Different from the existing researches about desertification which mostly start from nature sciences, economics, and law. This thesis tries to review the issue of grassland desertification on socal and cultural aspect from the point of view of new ecological anthropology.
