With the development of the science technology, there is a high requirement for the performance of optical systems in spaceflight, astronomic, fine-machining areas. For some optical system design of complex structure and characteristic, it's a need to be simulated by non-sequential ray tracing method. The purpose of this paper is to value the precision of this method. This paper introduced the Monte Carlo simulation method and the principle of non-sequential ray trace which based on this method. Using LightTools-computer software which based on Monte Carlo ray trace method took some numerical simulation examples which could be calculated by some theory formulary, and got the result of calculation precision in non-sequential ray trace by comparing the result between theory calculation and numerical simulation. The detailed analysis included: (1)the illumination distribution of a plane produced by a point source; (2)the Fresnel Loss of parallel beam of light's refraction and reflection on the medium interface; (3)the best uniform structure of ellipse-rod illumination system used in projection system; and (4)the analysis of sample error by information theory.By analyzing the illumination distribution of a plane produced by a point source we could get: the standard deviation of illumination on each bin is proportional to the reciprocal of square root of ray number in the bin. This is consistent with error result of Monte Carlo method on mathematics. By using Fourier series we put forward the ray number in each bin needed to be traced at some precision level. By analyzing the refraction and reflection of light on a medium interface we got: the result of LightTools simulation is totally consistent with the Fresnel equations. There is a little error.
