Orientation relationship is one of the important contents in GIS spatial relationship. And it is related to the target object, reference object and reference frame. The urban reference frame model is crucial for establishing the spatial location and for way-finding. We will combine the naive cognation theory and method into the GIS data model by the cognitive experiments, and discuss the reference frame model of the urban combining by the 4-cardinal directions and layout in this paper.The grid type of road network is the common in China urban. Generally, its qualitative spatial reference frame may be modeled to the four cardinal directions in the urban with grid type, i.e. taking the urban center as the origin of coordinates, deciding cardinal direction according to north and south.In this model, we express the spatial relation by the natural language and regard the knowledge of landmark as key and reference objects in the reasoning.We propose to use quad-tree index to the way-finding in the urban with four cardinal directions according to the characteristics of urban model. The landmarks will be selected by some principle and method and be hierarchical. Then, the paper will illustrate the spatial relationship of the geographic objects inner the urban based on the model. Finally we will formalize the special urban reference frame model in order for locating and way-finding.Firstly, we will introduce the urban spatial reference frame with four positions, including the basic concepts of hierarchical space inference, the composition of frame and how to express geographic entities in it. Then we illustrate the positions of geographic entities and ways in this reference frame by the hierarchical landmarks selected in specific area. Following is the experimental study in the space relations of the special urban reference frame model. From the perspective of Geo-Spatial Cognition, this paper first carries on the cognitive experiments to test the cognitive plausibility of the new theory. Then we designed a system based on the spatial reference frame with four positions. At last, it's the conclusion and future prospect ion.
