With continuous development of the electronic computer technology, computer is widely used in graphics images. At the same time, it promotes the formation and development of a Geography Information System (GIS). Most cities have collected a large amount of land resources and mineral resources data, including topographic maps, cadastral maps, detailed investigation plans, current maps, aerial photo satellite photo and mineral distribution maps. The data mentioned above is reflected as two-dimensional floor plan on the computer. Although the topographic maps with marking contour depict the abstract three-dimensional (3-D) shape of the terrain to the professional, the general staff normally feel the visual differences and difficulties to read. If 3-D graphics or images are created based on the contour data, and a variety of thematic image content is displayed on the surface of this graphic, 3-D graphical content can be observed intuitively. This paper attempts to form a 3-D multi-line through giving elevation value to the Z direction of the contour graphics, and then to generate 3-D grid graphics in accordance with the 3DS MAX software, and finally to overlay the thematic image as a map in the 3-D topographical map to generate the DWF format 3-D graphics file of small capacity and with interactive operation. Moreover, the paper aims to explore the production and application methods of the 3-D graphic images suitable for small and medium-sized amount of data with day-to-day applications.
