The application of velocity and distance measurement is very extensive used in engineering measurement. Traditional methods of these measurements are mainly used by special measurement equipment. After the emergence of the Global Positioning System, in particular, as the positioning accuracy of GPS receiver has continuously improved, it's an opportunity to realize the technological innovation of Ground-based measurements. With the background to measure velocity and distance of moving Target, new method of a Wireless Measurement System which based on GPS is put forward in this paper. This paper firstly summarizes the development of GPS and the principle of satellitepositioning, then introduce each part of the system--include the GPS receiver, LCD displaymodule, wireless data transmission module and RS232 interface level. After discuss the World Geodetic Coordinate System which GPS used, the format of Navigation Sentences and the arithmetic to calculate the distance by latitude and longitude, this paper introduce how to use the MATLAB to program the serial port data acquisition procedure, and how to use this procedure to get latitude, longitude and velocity from the Navigation Sentences. Then calculate the distance in real-time, achieve the object of the movement-related information acquisition. This system has simple hardware interface and the procedure is also easy-to-use. Tested showed that the measurement speed and system reliability are both satisfactorily. The precision of velocity and distance measurement meet the design requirements too, so the system will have a certain application.
