At present, membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been widely used in municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater and other fields of water treatment. But there exists membrane fouling during the operation of MBR. If we could find relatively better and more efficient methods to solve this problem, it will be further promoted to widespread implementation of this technology. In this paper the results of membrane filtration, membrane filtration mechanism and membrane bioreactors which have been already proposed by earlier researchers, particularly in filtration blocking model in MBR, were reviewed. Cross-flow filtration model of different micro filtration membranes has been examined through experiment and analyzed the decline in flux, cake filtration mechanism and partly blocking model during the process at constant pressure. The effects of different kinds of membrane on effecting parameters of MBR performance have been studied. Also preventative methods of membrane fouling in MBR are proposed, and methods of cleaning and backflushing are reinvestigated. Finally, suspended solids in MBR, biological degradation, sludge retention time and hydraulic retention time on membrane fouling have been discussed with experimental results. The effect of solid retention time and hydraulic retention time on membrane fouling has been discussed experimentally.
