With the rapid development of world economy, energy consumption has been doubled year by year. The vast majority of energy and chemical raw materials are derived from fossil resources, and non-polluting renewable energy sources have not been able to be put into application of large-scale industrialization, which led to atmospheric pollution, such as a rapid increase in the concentration of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, global warming, air quality declining and other environmental problems. Meanwhile, owing to the non-renewability of fossil energy resources and consumption of continuous mining, the world will soon be faced with energy depletion. Therefore, the development of renewable and recyclable new energy and chemical raw materials becomes emergent. The present study on many new energy sources shows biomass energy is the only liquid fuel and raw material in chemistry and chemical engineering directly converted into renewable energy.Copper slag as a rejectamenta of copper smelting process, it is very difficult to recycle. At present, the technologies of refining copper, iron and other valuable components from copper slag are not yet ripe, the mainly use of copper slag is the construction filler or directly discarded, which resulting in a great waste of resources. This paper innovative put forward the copper slag as a catalyst in the catalytic gasification of biomass based on the complexity of copper slag and rich in metal carbonate and less common metal. In this paper, we give a review about the development of biomass pyrolysis and gasification technology, besides we have a systematic and comprehensive exposition about the characteristics of the pyrolysis and gasification technology and the basic situation of the organization and development about biomass. In the experiment, a self-made fixed-bed biomass gasification reactor is employed, along with pine sawdust as biomass, and copper slag as catalyst. Mechanical mixing method is adopted to get the biomass and catalyst mixed. A preliminary study and quantitative analysis on variety of gas yield, gas composition, and lower heating value of produced gas are performed in the pine sawdust gasification process in which the copper slag as catalyst is adopted.Comparing the using of copper slag as a catalyst in the air gasification process with the non-use of catalyst, we come to the results that both the gas yield and the lower heating value of produced gas can be increased to a marked extent in the gasification process when copper slag is added as catalyst, and that gas components are evidently different during the two processes. The results of the experiments can be instructive and enlightening in a certain degree for developing newer and practical biomass gasification catalyst.
