Polyamide (PA) was commonly known as nylon. It was applied widely because of its excellent mechanical properties and better electrical performance, wear-resistant, oil, solvent, self-lubricating, self-extinguishing resistance corrosion resistance and good processing performance advantages. But Nylon6 (PA6) was notch sensitive thermoplastics. It have high crack initiation energy and low crack propagation energy, so the notched impact strength is very low. The toughening of these materials has important academic and applied values. Core-shell modifiers can act as impact modifiers to overcome the notch sensitivity of PA6 and improve their notched impact strength.Based on the mechanism of rubber toughening of plastics, maleic anhydride functionalization of the core-shell structured polyacrylic impact modifier, (AIM-g-MAH,abbreviated mAIM), was synthesized by seed emulsion polymerization. PA6/mAIM alloy was prepared by melt extrusion method. The structure characteristics of mAIM was investigated by Fourier Transformed Infrared spectrum, nanoparticle size Analyzer and scanning electron microscopy. The effect of particle size, core/shell ratio, maleic anhydride amount of mAIM and PA6/mAIM weight ratio on mechanical property of PA6/mAIM alloy was investigated. Based on the research above, To the best mAIM synthesis formula, process conditions was obtained in order to achieve a good toughening effect of PA6.The results shown that when the mAIM particle size was about 350nm, core/shell ratio was 85/15, maleic anhydride content was 1%, PA6/mAIM blend ratio was 70/30, the impact strength of PA6/mAIM reached 290 J/m which was 6 times than that of pure PA6.
