Mold flux layer in the mold/strand gap can exert considerable influence on lubrication and heat transfer process of the strand. With development of high speed continuous casting, the study on thermal properties of mold flux has important efects on both the eficiency of the continuous casting process and the surface quality of the steel product. But so far, the equipment, which is much similar to the practice, can simulate mold/strand heat transfer, and measure the thermal performance of mold flux, has not been developed.On the base of former,This paper has studied the amelioration and consummation of thermal characteristic analyzer for mold flux, and measured the thermal performance of mold fluxes for middle carbon steel and low carbon using this analyzer,Also simulated the horizontal heat transfer of actual mold different parts along the vertical.The thermal characteristics of the analyzer in this paper compared with predecessors has mainly improvements in the following:(1), heating system. (2), the temperature acquisition system. (3), gauge head lifting device. Heating system changes from direct heating to indirect heating, The silicon carbide used to heat with electricity, melt-flux element used to melt flux.0Cr21Al6Nb Fe-Cr-Al alloy was chosen as the material of melt-flux element. The shape and size are designed to bottom diameter of 120 mm, height 15 mm cylinder shape, and on it to open a diameter of 40 mm,5 mm deep slot.Mold fluxes for middle carbon steel and low carbon steel were done several repeatability experiments respectively by the thermal characteristic analyzer for mold flux. The results had some differences with practice, but on the whole, the thermal characteristic analyzer for mold flux could simulate the transverse heat transfer in the mold, and the design was reasonable. In addition, as we know, there is a considerable gap at the bottom of mold, that is, there is a big interface thermal resistance,so the stainless steel is chosed to make gauge head.Because its thermal conductivity is much smaller than copper, used to measure the thermal performance of mold flux,which used to simulate the heat transfer at the bottom of mold:Mold fluxes for middle carbon steel and for low carbon steel were done several repeatability experiments respectively. The results indicated the test data was some reproducibility, and under different factors it was comparability through analysis of variance. Taking into consideration the actual conditions, the data measured by thermal characteristic analyzer was relative reliable, and the analyzer could be used to research the influence of chemical composition on thermal performance of mold flux.Under the experiment conditions, the thermal resistance of ST-SP/666M3 (MC) was 8.120~8.676×10-4m2·K/W, the thermal resistance of ST-SP/616AJ2 (LC) was 3.484~3.977×10-4m2·K/WThis paper has discussed the effect of volume of cooling water,thickness of flux film and chemical component on heat flow distribution,heat transfer coefficient and flux thermal resistance of mold flux.
