With the continuous development of industrial technology, hard-cutting materials have been used increasingly widely in various industries, but there are many problems in its processing. Hard-cutting materials has poor machinability. By the traditional way of cutting, not only tools wear is serious, processing quality is not ensured, but also cutting fluid cause great harm to environment and human. As a modern manufacturing technology, cryogenic cutting technology is one of effective ways to improve machining efficiency of hard-cutting materials. The experiment study of cryogenic cutting on hard-cutting materials was put forward in the paper with the method of liquid nitrogen cooling. This paper begins with discussion of the machinability of hard-cutting materials, followed by analysis the mechanism of cryogenic cutting. With hard-cutting materials 35CrMnSiA high-strength steel as the research object, the comparison experiment of cryogenic cutting with dry cutting is made in this paper. The changes of cutting force, surface roughness, tool wear and chip-breaking behavior on two cutting conditions were mostly studied. The single factor and orthogonal test was applied to study cutting force, and the cutting empirical formula was established in this paper. The effect of cutting elements on the surface of 35CrMnSiA was studied by the single factor test. By changing the length of cutting stroke, the wear of tool flank on two kinds of cutting was measured. The experimental results indicate that cryogenic cutting can decrease cutting force, improve surface qualilty, reduce tool wear and enhance chip-breaking effects.Through the study of topic, it is realized that cryogenic cutting is a kind of the effective way to improve hard-cutting materials processing. As a clean and efficient technique of manufacturing, cryogenic cutting is worth researching deeply.
