Sulfur content in coal is one of the important factors to evaluate the quality of the coal which restricts the industrial use seriously. In addition, the oxysulfide produced by burning coal can combine with water into being sulfurous acid which can bring serious harm to the human society, such as environmental pollution, destruction of vegetation, even endanger people’s health. Therefore, it is a significant research work for accurately determining of sulfur level in coal so that we can take some appropriate progress to reduce the influence of sulfur in coal.Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence(EDXRF) analysis is a kind of instrument detection method for determination of composition, content and physical characteristics of material. EDXRF analysis technology already has many years history for determination of major and trace elements. It has been widely used in metallurgy, materials science, historical relic identification, environment, biomedical sciences and other fields. Especially, a variety of data can be obtained in the process of real time and on-line analysis and the characteristics cannot be compared by other methods.Currently, there are many different kinds of detection method for the sulfur content in coal, including Eschka method, high temperature combustion neutralization method, coulomb titration and oxygen bomb method. Compared with conventional detection method, it has the advantage of fast analysis speed, wide detection range and analysis of material variety, etc. Simultaneously, it is one of the preferred instruments for determination of composition and content of material. Due to the limitations of EDXRF determination of sulfur element, such as low fluorescence yield, low excitation efficiency, low characteristic X-ray energy, and the characteristic lines of other light elements disturb S-peak, making EDXRF analysis technology restrained for sulfur analysis. In this paper, for the problem of low detection sensitivity of EDXRF spectrum technology, a reasonable and effective method was investigated for determination of sulfur content in coal by EDXRF. In this method, the coal samples were disposed before measurement. Then the element sulfur was converted into the medium atomic number element barium. The sulfur content in coal was determined by the chemical quantitative relationship between element sulfur and barium. The sulfur in coal was measured using EDXRF by measuring the intermediate target element and employing an indirect meas-urement method. In addition, using the element Ba which has the good fluorescence effect as the target element, the optimum sample preparation and tube excitation conditions were obtained by measuring two different content barium tablet samples of Ba SO4 powder and Ba SO4 with coal powder mixture. The measurement method is beneficial to accelerate the speed for sulfur content analysis, improve the efficiency of analysis, and has the guiding significance for determination of other light elements.
