Objective:To investigate the content of methyl tert-bnty1 ether in air, water bodies, soil and drinking water in Beijing city. The study will evaluate the potential health risks to the local residents via air inhalation and drinking water intake. And the study provided some environmental management of MTBE.Methods:Beijing city was selected as the study area. The air, water body (river water, reservoir water and ground water), soils (arterial highway topsoil and arid land topsoil) and drinking water in the study area were collected. And the concentrations of methyl tert-butyl ether were determined. Based on the the concentrations of methyl tert-butyl ether in environmental air and drinking water, a health risk assessment model proposed by the United States Evironmental Protection Agency (USEPA) was adopted to quantitatively assess the non-cancarcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for adult male and female by air inhalation and drinking water intake.Results:(1) Summer atmospheric MTBE concentration in each functional zone in the study area are as follows:Background zone was 0.390±0.044 μg/m3, tourism culture zone was 1.324±0.458 μg/m3, commercial residential zone was 1.142±0.524μg/m3, industrial zone was 1.383±0.942 μg/m3; winter atmospheric MTBE concentration in each functional area in the study area are as follows: Background zone was 1.410±0.758 μg/m3, tourism culture zone was 1.171±0.440 μg/m3, commercial residential zone was 1.141±0.614μg/m3, industrial zone was 5.698±10.980 μg/m3. MTBE concentration of the atmosphere is summer district are higher than the background zone. In the winter background zone MTBE concentration of the atmosphere was higher than the summer (P0.05). The MTBE concentration of the atmosphere in industrial zone in winter trended to be higher than that in other functional zones.(2)In winter atmospheric MTBE concentration was higher than midnight noon and afternoon in industrial area (P< 0.05), Maybe it was a difference between Emissions from factories at night; the atmospheric MTBE concentration in the commercial housing zone in midnight and in the afternoon was higher than that at noon (P<0.05)(3)The MTBE concentrations in groundwater, surface water and drinking water in summer were 0.33±0.22 μg/L,0.11±0.05 μg/L,0.09±0.03 μg/L, The MTBE concentrations in groundwater, surface water and drinking water in winter were 0.99±0.94μg/L,0.31±0.53μg/L and 0.08±0.02ug/L. The MTBE concentration in surface water in winter was higher than that in summer.The MTBE concentrations in surface water trended to higher than that in drinking water in summer and winter.(4) Main road surface soil and arid land soil MTBE concentration in the study area were 0.0117 μg/kg and 0.0121 μg/kg, there was no statistically significant difference between the two soils.(5) The air suction and water intake of exposure of MTBE health risks are less than 1, within the crowd health risk to an acceptable level.(6) Industrial zone in winter air inhalation exposure in both men and women of the health risks of MTBE were 3.11×10-6 and 2.67 ×10-6, air inhalation exposure joint water exposure risk of cancer were 3.14×10-6 and 2.70 ×10-6, above the level of the population health.Conclusions:(1) Atmosphere, water, soil and water environment in the study area were detected in MTBE.(2) The MTBE concentration in the atmosphere in Beijing is at a low level.(3) The study area of surface water, groundwater and drinking water didn’t be polluted by MTBE.(4) The top soil didn’t be polluted by MTBE.(5) The main route of MTBE exposure to the population was through air and respiratory exposure dose accounted for more than 90% of the total exposure dose.(6) MTBE by air suction and water intake exposed not caused the risk of cancer in the general population in the study area.(7) In the general population, the potential risk of MTBE exposure by air suction and water intake was existing. The study area needs to attract the attention of us.(8) According to the environmental pollution characteristics and human health assessment of MTBE in Beijing, the study suggested that "continue to use but restrict MTBE step by step, and develop alternatives of it actively.
