In modern welding technology, because of the lower labor intensity and toxic gas breathe in, higher work efficiency and precision, the automatic welding have become the most perspective technology. With the fast development of the machine vision in recent years, the automatic welding technology used in seam tracking would raise a new revolution. Based on This paper designed a monocular vision seam tracking system based on MATLAB image processing on the basis of a large number of vision application analyzing of the world.In the vision seam tracking system, using the seam surface’s laser strip image, seam groove image and welding-gun location image acquired by vision sensing system as the first step, then the image would be put into the computer, the distance between gun and seam center calculated by the MATLAB image processing software; the deviation between gun and seam calculated by the calibration experiment; finally, the arc welding robot would correct the gun location according the deviation by man-machine interface and serial communication and achieve the intention of real-time tracking of automatic welding.The design process include: Planning and designing the frame construction; designing the image processing program based on MATLAB and extracting the location deviation between seam center and welding-gun of image; concluding the relation of vision sensing system and desk coordinate by calibration experiment; sending the deviation to robot by the communication technology of computer and robot and achieving the welding work.The image distance between welding-gun and seam groove center needs to be tested by experiment when the system has done. The result proves that the deviation which corrected by arc welding robot is precisely and reliably. What is more, the deviation of 0.2mm is enough to satisfy the requirement of welding.
