The study about the high performance foam was on the basis of butyl methacrylate andacrylamide monomer on which author`s team had been working. There was a two-step methodthat the first step was to produce a uniform foamable BMA/AM biopolymer under lowtemperature and then the second one was to foam it under high temperature. Because AMmonomer was in solid at room temperature in the synthesis, a large number of monomer residueexisted in the BMA/AM copolymer. In the paper under the financial support from the NationalScience Foundation (51103134), the structure and performance of BMA/AM biopolymersynthesised through bulk polymerization was researched deep on the basis of the early work. The results were listed as follows:(1) The BMA/AM bulk polymerization was via the batch feeding with the main reactionmonomers BMA and AM. The prepolymerization was through two batch feeding of BMA underhigh temperature and the post polymerization was under low temperature. On the basis of theBMA/AM copolymer of the research group, the synthesis of BMA/AM was on the selection ofdifferent batch feeding of BMA. The results indicated that the content of the AM unites in theBMA/AM copolymer molecular chain increased and the thermal stability and compressionproperty of BMA/AM copolymers improved. When the batch feeding of BMA was50%/50%,the content of the AM unites in the copolymer molecular chain was the highest and theperformance was best.(2) The huge influence of pre-polymerization temperature on the synthesis and property ofBMA/AM copolymer. With the theoretical research on the relationship of temperature andpolymerization rate via Arrhenius empirical formula, the effect of pre-polymerizationtemperature on the structure and properties of BMA/AM copolymers were investigated throughinfrared adsorption spectra (FTIR-ATR), nuclear magnetic resonance analysis (13C NMR),differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimeter (TGA) and universal materialtesting machine. The results indicated that with the pre-polymerization temperature rising, therate of BMA/AM copolymerization accelerated, the content of the AM unites in the BMA/AM copolymer molecular chain increased and the performance of BMA/AM copolymers improved.(3) Influence rule of acrylic acid (AA) on the synthesis and property of BMA/AMcopolymer. Effects of AA on the synthesis and performance of BMA/AM copolymer wereinvestigated by adding AA into the copolymerization system. The structure and properties ofBMA/AM copolymers were investigated through infrared adsorption spectra (FTIR-ATR),thermogravimeter (TGA) and universal material testing machine. The experiment resultsindicated that the content of AM monomer which dissolved in the reaction system increasedwith the addition of AA, the content of the AM unites in the BMA/AM copolymer molecularchain increased. And the thermal stability and compression property of BMA/AM copolymerwould be evidently improved.
