Organic pollutants having a serious effect to water environment, especially thearomatic organic pollutants have caused wide public concern. Bisphenol A (BPA) is atypically water soluble organic pollutant. It can disturb human’s endocrine system andcause a lesion of the organism. Recently, BPA were detected from many source ofdrinking water. In the first part of this study, we synthesize a polymer flocculant containinghydrophobic chains, to interaction with BPA to form a hydrophobic associatingsystem, and induce BPA settle with particle in the waste water through flocculationdeposition. Two kinds of binary copolymer were polymerized using lauryl methacrylates(LMA) and acrylic acid (AA) or acrylamide (AM) as the monomer. The BPA removalefficiency of the copolymer flocculant was evaluated by a series of flocculationexperiments using BPA as the model compound. It was demonstrated that the removaleffect of the two kinds of copolymer flocculant was better than the correspondinghomopolymers. The removal rates reached80.9%and87.5%, respectively. Thepossible mechanism is that the polymers easily form dynamic reversible physicalcrosslink network by the junctions of the long alkyl chain in the copolymers, thehydrophobic part of BPA react with the copolymers and cause a coagulation withkaolin particle.Dye wastewater is a relatively large class of wastewater in the chemical industry.Flocculating method is widely used in dye wastewater decolorizing treatments, butstill faces the problem of low decoloring effect for water soluble dyes. In the secondpart, a copolymer flocculant containing surfactant side chain has been polymerized using polyethylene glycol methacrylate (PEGMA) and acrylamide (AM) as themonomers. The decolorization effect of the copolymer flocculant to water-solubledyes was evaluated through decolorization experiments using disperse dyes, anionicdyes and cationic dyes as the model compounds. The decolorizing rate of thecopolymer flocculant can reach100%,93.3%and93.6%, respectively. The decoloringrate of flocculating decoloring agent was varied changing the macromoleculestructure, flocculant dosage, surfactant concentration and wastewater pH. To explaindecolorization process, diameter of the particles in the waste water during flocculatingprocess was monitored by dynamic laser light scattering instrument. The detailedmechanism proposed is that after the mixed micelles with dyes and surfactant formedthe PEG side chains in the copolymer take part in and result in aggregation of themixed micelles to settle with flocculation. The significance of present study is the synthesis of three types of copolymersthat can applicated in processing water soluble organic pollutants. We demonstratetwo flocculating mechanisms of water-soluble organic pollutants. It providestheoretical basis for water-soluble organic pollutants.
