Oil spill accidents occurred frequently in recent years, causing unprecedentedly oil pollutions and threatening marine ecological environment. Tracing and identifying the oil spill are the major subjects of marine environment detection, whilst the main purpose of this research is to find a method which can detect oil spill more quickly, precisely, and economically. To address the global needs of fast oil spill detection, this thesis summarizes the latest research results. Traditional Infrared Spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography always operate at low accuracy and efficiency. However, to meet the demand for rapid identification of spill oil sources a novel method has been proposed by combining the Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared Spectroscopy and Gas Chromatography. This thesis experimented the 180# fuel oil and its weathered byproducts; analyzed and compared the spectral-data generated by two methods mentioned above. Using the ratio of n-alkanes in Gas Chromatography as initial weight, multiplying with the corresponded prototype principal component of Infrared Spectroscopy established the infrared spectrogram of fuel oil. The infrared spectrogram is used to optimize the weights by comparing the original spectrograms. As a result, the rapid Infrared Spectrum method of oil spill identification takes the advantage of the Gas Chromatography. The Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared Spectroscopy method can identify oil type rapidly, but it cannot identify weathering degree of oil spill. Using Gas Chromatography consumes a lot of time and involves tedious preparation procedures. However, the Gas Chromatography can distinguish the degree of oil-wreathing while the Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared Spectroscopy method cannot. The experiments showed that using this method can explicitly identify the degree of weathering conditions at low cost. The efficiency of Gas Chromatography increased 18 times, but whilst the cost has been reduced 10 times comparing to previous method. The experiments demonstrated that using the method proposed in this thesis, can significantly improve identification speed and precision of oil spill, and save cost. The method has a potential prospect in the application of oil spill identification and can provide favorable support to determine malpractice, the safeguarding of marine rights and interests, and the reducing of oil pollution in ocean.
