China is a big country in coal production and consumption. At present, the main coal preparation methods are jigging coal, dense medium coal, dry coal, y-ray coal and so on. But when these methods are used, the problems of resource waste, low sorting accuracy and high cost are coming. With these problems, this paper presents a new method of identifying coal and gangue, and this method is recognition of coal and gangue based on x-ray. The advantages of this method are high separation efficiency, high accuracy and low cost. X-ray detection and recognition is mainly based on the different element, different density and different absorption of coal and gangue. On this principle, the attenuation degree of x-ray is different, then the separation of coal and gangue is realized.Firstly, a hardware environment for the recognition system is built in this paper, including a x-ray machine, a data acquisition card, a detector, a belt conveyor, and a host computer. The x-ray machine provides x-ray to detect coal and gangue. The detector and data acquisition card complete the acquisition and conversion of x-ray signal. And the host computer receives this signal and finishes analysis and processing. Secondly, according to the functional requirement, this paper achieves software programming and debugging. This software part is divided into two modules, which are an x-ray source control module and a data acquisition card control module. The first module is used to implement voltage and current control of the x-ray source. The development process of the first module is introduced in this paper. The second module is used to reach data card control and data analysis. Finally, data processing and image analysis is introduced in this paper. And the characteristics of pixel value of coal and gangue is obtained. On this basis, the identification threshold of coal and gangue is determined.The method of recognition of coal and gangue based on x-ray is introduced in this paper. This method improves the accuracy of coal preparation with the threshold comparison. In the sorting system, the scanning speed of x-ray is up to three miles per second. Consequently, the separation efficiency of coal and gangue is improved. In addition, simple machine is used in this method, so the goal of low cost is reached.
